JABARMEDIA – President Prabowo Subianto has officially proposed Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for the new Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI). The nomination was submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday, August 10, 2026. This action fills the vacancy left by Perry Warjiyo, who resigned on July 25, 2026. Ms. Damayanti has served as Acting Governor since Warjiyo’s departure. Her formal nomination marks a pivotal moment for the nation’s monetary policy leadership.
Ms. Damayanti, born in Jakarta in 1963, brings extensive experience to this crucial role. She earned her Bachelor of Economics degree from Universitas Indonesia (UI). She also obtained a Master of Science in Regional Science from Cornell University in New York, United States. Her distinguished career in the monetary sector began early. It showcases a consistent trajectory of leadership and expertise within financial institutions and government bodies.
Destry Damayanti’s Illustrious Career Path
Ms. Damayanti’s professional journey commenced as a Senior Economic Adviser to the British Ambassador for Indonesia from 2000 to 2003. She then served as a researcher and pengajar at the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Indonesia, between 2005 and 2006. In the private sector, she was Head of Economist at Mandiri Sekuritas from 2005 to 2011. She also served as Chief Economist at Bank Mandiri from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, she chaired the Economic Task Force of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) from 2014 to 2015.
Her tenure at public financial institutions further solidified her credentials. From 2015 to 2019, she served as a Member of the Board of Commissioners at the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS). Ms. Damayanti was subsequently appointed as Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia for the 2019-2024 term. She assumed this position on August 7, 2019, under Presidential Decree Number 74/P Year 2019. She was reappointed to the same role for the 2024-2029 period via Presidential Decree Number 74/P Year 2024. Her deep understanding of Indonesia’s economic landscape is a significant asset. This makes her a strong candidate for the central bank’s highest office.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi first conveyed the news of Ms. Damayanti’s nomination. He confirmed President Prabowo Subianto had exclusively put forward one name for the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia. “Today, upon the President’s instruction, we were officially delegated and tasked to submit several presidential letters to the DPR. We submitted several presidential letters, first concerning the definitive candidate for BI Governor, along with candidates for Senior Deputy Governor and for Deputy Governor, as the number has decreased by one,” stated Prasetyo Hadi at the DPR Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, August 10, 2026. This formal submission initiates the parliamentary approval process for Indonesia’s monetary authority leadership.
